The New Year is right around the corner, and have you written down your resolutions yet? New Year’s resolutions are a great way to inspire us to achieve our goals. But, if we may ask a question, have you ever asked yourself why we choose to tackle these starting January 1st? Yes, the name does imply that they’re goals for the coming year, but why don’t we start now?
Here are three reasons why you should start your resolutions before New Year’s Day.
1. The pressure’s on.
When people start a resolution on the very first day of the year, it adds unnecessary pressure. It’s a myth that solely working on your goals during the first week or day of the year increases your chances of success.
This added pressure could lead you to easily burnout from your goals, especially if you fail to be consistent. Plus, you’re more likely to get frustrated with yourself if you start along with everyone else.
Remember that YOU decide when you are ready to make the change. You have complete control over whether or not you stick to the resolutions you’ve set for yourself. If you start before January 1, you’ll avoid the pressure of having to be perfectly consistent with your goals because you can let go of the unrealistic expectations.
2. You get a head start over everyone else.
“The early bird gets the worm.” This is an obvious benefit, but it’s often overlooked because of the tendency to procrastinate. One of the most common resolutions is to lose weight. If you decide to start going to the gym on January 1, you’ll arrive at a crowded gym with people who had the same idea as you.
You can avoid this by acting now before anyone else does. We also put ourselves at an advantage. For example, if you decide to lead a healthier life now, you’ll be making better food choices during the remaining celebrations and avoid gaining excess weight. You’ll then end up with a smaller amount of weight to lose for the year!
3. You’ll be in a better position for consistency.
Starting now gives you a chance to set realistic goals and a proper course of action. You also place yourself in an advantageous position mentally because you are not binding yourself to the New Year’s pressure. You realize that you have control over your goals and results.
Plus, acting now is always better than putting it off. Jump in with a positive attitude at the start and experience change much earlier than everyone else. There’s absolutely no reason to delay becoming a better you. Let’s make 2019 the year we show initiative towards our resolutions!
